Hello! My name is
Caleb Vanden Boom.
I am a designer living &
working in Minneapolis, MN.
Currently an intern @ Joyce.
Imprints was a fashion showcase for apparel students in the College of Design. Designers were asked to create a garment with unconventional materials in an exploration of their identity. Using an embroidery machine, I rendered a symbol of identity, the fingerprint, using thread and fabric as a reflection of their mediums.
This summer I worked with the team at Joyce on a re-brand of Northeast Wellness, a practice that has a unique approach to wellbeing and personal care. I had the largest hand in this direction, which was ultimately unselected. This project will be updated when the branding is finalized.
Bring Your Own Business Card was a networking event for creative students hosted by Gülgün Kayim, the Director of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy for the City of Minneapolis. Local professionals working in the creative sector were brought in to share their knowledge with students. I created an expressive and colorful identity populated by various symbols and objects representative of the different professions represented.
Origin of Species
As a part of coursework I re-designed the cover of Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species". The 15 outer points are symbolic of the 15 finches that Darwin studied in the Galapagos. The piece is constructed with a single thread which emphasizes the shared origin that all species share through evolutionary processes.
Pickford is an in progress typeface that I have been been working on for the last few months. The font is named after the street that I grew up on in Madison, WI. Pickford is a functional and decorative face that combines old style contrast and ornamentations in a new and unexpected manner. Using a combination of a controlled and balanced calligraphic serif body with unexpected interruptions creates a unique, unconventional and playful font.
Reminder Manufacturing is a fictional clothing brand I created for coursework. Reminder is a company that values quality and craft in the production of their garments that are made in the USA by a small team of designers. Traditionally tying a string around your index finger was a method of reminding yourself to do something. In this logo the reminder is of the forgotten craft of older methods of clothing production. In the world of fast fashion and massive garment waste Reminder values quality and sustainable practices.
Topical is a creative exercise by Kate Doyle and I. Our objective is to research and design large newsprint posters around topics of interest to us. The first edition, completed in late August, explored the 2017 U.S. total solar eclipse. A new poster will be released in September.
